Simple Honey and Oat Flapjacks

Delicious & Simple Honey Flapjacks

Basic Ingredients

The ingredients for these flapjacks couldn’t be more simple. The only noticeable difference from the more traditional flapjacks to these, is the substitution of Golden Syrup for Honey – this is to lower the sugar content flapjacks but to also add more flavour to this already delicious snack!

These are your basic ingredients –

400g / 14oz Porridge Oats

200g / 7oz Unsalted Butter

200g / 7oz Demerara Sugar

200g / 7oz Honey

So, as you can see there are just 4 key ingredients to making these flapjacks, and everything is readily available at your local shop – no excuses!

Optional Extras –

  • 50g/1¾oz Nuts, or
  • 50g/1¾oz Dried Fruits, or
  • 50g/1¾oz Glacé Ginger, or
  • 50g/1¾oz Chopped or Desiccated Coconut

From the extra’s above, I’ve decided to add 50g of chopped nuts, because they’re packed with additional energy and offer an extra crutch to the flapjacks. My aim is to have a more healthy snack that I can have during a busy day to keep my body fuelled between training.

Ultimately you can add anything you like to your flapjacks, make them unique and your very own.

Instructions

Now we come to the fun part – adding it all together. With not wanting to take anything away from this….all you’re actually going to do, is add everything together and mix thoroughly until all the oats and nuts are covered and looking golden brown.

Follow these 5 very simple steps and you’ll be enjoying your warm flapjacks in no more than 20 minutes –

  1. Put the butter, sugar and honey into a saucepan and heat gradually, stirring occasionally, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. You’ll be left with a thick brown syrup looking liquid.

  2. Add the oats and nuts / fruit / ginger / coconut (depending on what you’re using) and mix well until everything is looking well covered and golden. You can do this on a very low heat still, or take away from the heat if you can do this quickly.

  3. Transfer the flapjack mixture to your prepared cake tin and spread evenly to about 2cm thick (the thicker your mixture, the softer the centre of the flapjacks will be after baking). Smooth the surface with the back of a spoon until flat.

  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180C/350F/Gas 4 for 15-20 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges, but still slightly soft in the middle.

  5. Cut to your chosen size, then enjoy your flapjack creation!

    (for information, these flapjacks were baked in the oven for approx. 18 minutes).

These flapjacks are delicious on their own, but go very well with a freshly brewed cup of black coffee – my favourite combination!

Enjoy them for breakfast or a mid-morning snack to fuel yourself for the rest on the morning and into the early afternoon. They’re quick and easy to make and can be stored in a tin for little more than a week before they begin to go soft – however, I’ll be surprised if they last that long once you’ve tasted them!!
